We address the second main problem of aquaculture in Uganda: fish feed. Fish feed is almost completely imported from countries like Thailand, Brazil, Kenya or Zambia, and is therefore very expensive and often of low quality. The necessary raw materials, especially fish meal as a source of protein, also have to be imported, which is why we want to develop fish feed production that can supply fish farmers with high-quality fish feed using local raw materials and with decentralised production units throughout the country. We do not want to use raw materials that are directly suitable for human consumption (e.g. soybeans as a protein source) as fish feed.

It Works Perfectly With Black Soldier Fly

Here we rely on the innovation of using special insects as an inexpensive but highly efficient source of protein. For the breeding of these insects, only organic waste is used that is not suitable for human consumption and often poses a problem for disposal.

Together with Makerere University, we will develop suitable recipes for the different conditions (availability of raw materials) in Uganda. Here, too, training always comes first in order to ensure quality in the long-run. The use of high-quality and affordable feed is, besides fingerlings, the prerequisite for economic fish farming.
